In this unit students gain an understanding of the role of the creative producer as they take a project through development from initial idea to targeting markets and trans media opportunities. The unit's emphasis is on developing a project whilst navigating the complex connections between government incentives, business and markets. On completion of this unit students will have formed Creative Producer teams and an advanced knowledge of professional expectations in this industry. Students will develop pre-production material, and the 'paperwork' that surrounds a film's market proposal, preparing them to begin production of their own potential future creative project. This unit is co-taught with 11144 The Creative Producer.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Develop an industry standard project plan and proposal which identifies and aligns with a targeted market;
2. Evaluate and communicate advanced knowledge of investment and return in the development of a creative cinematic project, both through a commercial and independent viewpoint;
3. Create an investment budget and a production bible for a short film through integrating and synthesising complex technical understandings; and
4. Lead a creative team and work collaboratively in the development of a short film.

Unit description

In this unit students gain an understanding of the role of the creative producer as they take a project through pre-production development: they will develop projects from initial idea to script development to creative packaging to targeting markets to budget negotiations. The unit's emphasis is on developing a project whilst navigating the complex connections between creative roles, government incentives, business, budgets and markets. On completion of this unit students will have formed into Creative Producer teams. The teams will develop pre-production material, and the 'paperwork' that surrounds a film's market proposal, ready to begin production of their graduating film in the following unit. They will also be able to answer this question, "How many Producers does it take to change a light bulb?" The online unit will make use of synchronous and asynchronous forms of online teaching.
