Students in this unit will plan and execute a substantial research project in their disciplinary fields. They will define a research question based on the application of appropriate theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches. Students present their research in the form of a research dissertation of approximately 10,000 words, or an equivalent creative outcome supported by a 3,000 to 4,000 word reflective piece. This is a substantial undertaking, and appropriate academic supervisor will be appointed to each student to oversee their project. In addition, students will be given opportunities to engage with, and benefit from research cultures within the Faculty of Arts and Design Research Centres, and present their study in an academic forum.

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on theory and research practice;
2. Apply an advanced knowledge of recent disciplinary developments in their disciplinary field;
3. Demonstrate skills and understanding in the processes of developing novel research and scholarship;
4. With a high level of personal autonomy and accountability undertake a substantial research project or professional project which has potential to produce new knowledge; and
5. Communicate research findings with peers, in academic forums and engagement with the community of researchers within UC and within relevant professions.
